  1. Why give us only five? The other two, according to Butler, are family ties and believing in the Christian religion.

    But where is this from? I have seen it cited as from THE WAY OF ALL FLESH and from Butler’s NOTEBOOKS, but it doesn’t appear in either according to full-text versions on the Internet.

    In Shaw’s MAJOR BARBARA the munitions tycoon Andrew Undershaft gives another list. “The seven deadly sins,” he says. “Food, clothing, firing, rent, taxes, respectability and children. Nothing can lift those seven millstones from man’s neck but money; and the spirit cannot soar until the millstones are lifted.”
